bio

Tim Scherer has taken a nomadic approach to his artistic journey. From growing up between Japan, Germany, and the States, his path has led him through his studies in Hamburg to his current home in Berlin, all the while building meaningful musical relationships with kindred spirits in Cologne, Amsterdam, and New York. Through this journey, he has created a community that is bigger than merely one scene or one band, fostering music that is deep and colorful in palette as a result of the wealth of collaboration it pulls from.

From fascinations with contemporary trailblazers of Black American Music, to deep inspirations by way of the free-floating ECM catalogue, Tim follows in the footsteps of a wide spectrum of jazz visionaries. His playing and his writing wades in Jarrett-like rubato waters as much as it throttles through Immanuel Wilkins-inspired power pieces, thus creating a large dynamic and stylistic range to navigate in. This range of contemporary expression is informed by a studious love and respect for the lineage of Bird, Monk, and Barry Harris, amongst other shoes to grow into.

Tim has had the privilege to grace stages of the renowned ELBJAZZ and JazzBaltica festivals, as well as the great hall of the Elphilharmonie as part of their Jazz Academy program. Additionally, he has worked his project BLUFF into one of the country’s most actively touring jazz formations, accompanied by the release of their debut Sleight of Hand in 2023 and the single Coral late last year. His portfolio is further decorated by his trio, as well as collaborations with artists from all across Europe.
